Our Top 5 Bridal Waltz Songs for 2013!

2013 has been Funkified’s biggest year of weddings to date. It’s amazing and positively humbling for us to reflect on all the wonderful brides, grooms, MC’s, family members and friends, wedding planners, venue staff and, of course, musicians that we’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with to create so many individual versions of a perfect day. In the spirit of this, we thought it would be nice to commemorate the year thus far with a list of our top 5 favourite bridal waltz tunes. All work beautifully when played by either a live band or a DJ, and all bring something particularly special to the moment. Enjoy!

1) A Thousand Years – Christina Perri

Popularized by the Twilight movies (but don’t be put off!), this has hands down been the most frequently used wedding song of 2013. And for good reason! Romantic and bittersweet, this ballad will bring an unexampled sense of whimsy and is a perfect reflection on the sentiment of the moment.

2) I Wanna Dance With Somebody – Whitney Houston

Not exactly a new song, but we had a bride request it for her first dance last July and fell absolutely in love with the choice! It’s bold, original and fun. Not necessarily what you’d think of straight away for a bridal waltz – most folk would go with something a little more somber – but absolutely perfect for a couple who don’t take themselves too seriously and love a laugh. Bound to get everyone pumped for the d floor later as well!

3) Ho Hey -The Lumineers

We’ve had more than a few requests for this one, to our initial surprise – again, it’s an unconventional choice! But its sweet quirkiness makes it perfect for a more informal and super-current vibe. Also the crowd never fails to get into the shouts of ‘Ho, Hey’, engaging your family and friends in the moment – which is pretty special. Not to mention awesome.

4) At Last – Etta James

The epitome of vintage cool. The lyrics are about love and it’s a classic for a reason – what more can I say?

5) Please Don’t Stop The Music – Jamie Cullum

This reworking of the well known Rihanna song into a lounge/jazz style puts the song in a completely different light to the original. It’s a cover that a lot of people wouldn’t have heard and always serves as a unique talking point on the night. Plus it’s super hip.

So there you have it! Excited to see what the remainder of the year brings!

Thanks for the happy snap Bridget & Scott!

Love this one of Jess Pollard that Bridget & Scott sent us from their ceremony at the Royal Automobile Club of Australia! And the accompanying messagefrom Bridget definitely made us smile:

“I just wanted to say thank you for enabling us to have Jess play at our wedding! She was amazing! She has such a great voice and, even with a few hiccups with our scheduling, she was very professional. So many people have commented to us about how much they enjoyed listening to her… Hopefully I can listen to her again at a gig around Sydney!”

Thanks for the kind words! We’ll happily keep you up-to-date with Jess’ gig schedule, X
